You set your own pace. We recommend that you start with one course a semester until you have determined the right mix between professional, personal, and academic demands. Taking two classes a semester is typical and considered part-time, and would allow you to finish the degree program in 2 1/2 years. Full-time students could finish in 18-24 months, depending on the semester of entry and rotation of course offerings.
Graduate certificate students can complete a certificate program in two semesters.
All classes are taught online. And while courses are asynchronous*, many of our faculty also hold live sessions to enhance your academic experience. Live sessions are recorded for viewing at a later time.
Expectations of graduate students working online are no different from those of students attending class on a VT campus. Read more about VT-MIT's expectation of students.
*Asynchronous classes should not be confused for “self-paced.” Students will have assignments and deliverables each week, and faculty pay close attention to your online participation.
